My New Year’s resolution was to not enter and participate in any events that I did not train for to the best of my ability, because last year I entered quite a few events at the last moment when it was too late to train. A week ago this resolution was broken when a running friend had to pull out of the Helsby Running Club Essar Four Villages Half Marathon (quite a mouthful), transferring the entry to me. With no specific training for this event and a week to the race, I figured it would just be a good morning out running, and a good way to baseline my fitness for this year.
Unfortunately, instead of limbering up at the start line this very minute I am sat here writing because the event was cancelled yesterday due to adverse weather. Personally, I love the idea of a long run with others on a crisp winter’s morning with a snow-covered landscape as the backdrop. However, I saw how much preparation it took in the final 48 hours before the Tatton Yule Yomp last December and I appreciate how hard it must be for the organisers to have to pull the plug once the goody bags are ready, volunteers and marshals are prepared and the entire course is marked out. I think I won’t consider entering any other events till after I return from the Atlas Mountains next month.
On the bright side, I haven’t broken my New Year’s resolution!
Keep running!
